'Breaking Dawn Part 1' breaks 'Twilight' box office record

As expected, it was a huge weekend for Summit Entertainment's "Twilight" movie series, as "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" opened with $139.5 million domestically and $144 million overseas for a franchise best opening of $283.5 million.

Even though the fourth flick in the series -- starring Grand Rapids native Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart -- didn't match the $142.8 million in North American receipts that "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" rang up on the same weekend two years ago, the take was enough to make it the fifth largest opening of all time domestically, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Breaking Dawn Part 1" now is the 10th largest opening worldwide. It knocked out the second installment in the series, "New Moon," which had an international opening take of $275.3 million in 2009. Here's a closer look at the weekend's domestic box office numbers.

1. " The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1," $139.5 million.

2. " Happy Feet Two," $22.5 million.

3. " Immortals," $12.3 million.

4. " Jack and Jill," $12 million.

5. " Puss in Boots," $10.7 million.

CONGRATULATIONS (:
